Radio 1 Test

1. How long has Greg James been presenting The Radio 1 Breakfast show?

Since September 2018.

2. What is the age range of the target audience that the R1BS aim to attract?
15-29 year olds.

3. What are the main differences between R1BS and commercial stations' breakfast shows like Capital FM?
BBC R1 is paid for by the government, whilst commercial stations such as Capital FM are predominantly paid for by advertisements.

4. List as many ways audiences can access Radio 1 that you can think of.
Radio 1's audience can access media from all types of platforms, such as the radio social media and YouTube. With all these types they are allowed to re-watch/listen to previous podcast (or in some cases live to help enhance a larger audience.

5. How can the audience interact with the R1BS?
The radio 1 number and text number is often given out live on the show to help get the audience involved with current debates/games. The social media platforms such as Instagram, Facebook and Twitter provides a free service for the public to contact the show.

6. Which professional body regulates Radio and how might this affect what is broadcast?
Ofcom is a British government-approved regulatory and competition authority for the broadcasting, telecommunications. Its duty is to represent interests of citizens and consumers by promoting competition and protecting the public form harmful/offensive media. Therefore, explicit songs and material will not be shared on air the radio stations which can sometimes deprive entertainment for some of the audience.

7. How does The R1BS fulfil its remits as a public service broadcaster?
It firstly creates new and exciting games in a short period which helps keep the audience entertained, the portrayal of new emerging British artists helps please the consumer; (the news and weather are read every half an hour) therefore it abides by the remit of entertaining and educating its audience.

8. Why is the controller of Radio 1, Ben Cooper unconcerned about the drop in listening figures for the R1BS?
As the audience who was plummeting was not the target audience (30+) therefore Ben Cooper in fact congratulated Nick Grimshaw in scaring off the other audience. As it may have of had an effect of the atmosphere around the station due the varied audience.

WITH REFERENCE TO R1BS EPISODES give examples:
9. How does the program promote British music?
The programme promotes new British and existing popular British music in a way that catches the ear of the audience, they firstly announce the new arrival of the song and talk good things about the up coming track or artist to help the audience feel more intrigued.

10. What genres of music were played during your slot? Give some examples.
House music was played during the episode that i listened to, this by Jax Jones feat. Years & Years w/ play. Shortly after, Post Malone's 'wow' which seems to be hip hop. I believe that hip hip seems to dominant the tracks played on the radio one breakfast show as it appeals to the largest group of listeners.

11. Celebrity interviews - Who is being interviewed and what are they being interviewed about? How many of the interviews are with British people?
Former England cricketer Graeme Swann was being interviewed on the show, he is English and was helping give away a trip of a lifetime to go and watch the world cricket final! I believe he was interviewed as he was an English icon when it comes to the cricketing world and a star of the popular show Dancing on ice - therefore the two subjects could be talked about for the audiences entertainment-.

12. News items - List the stories and identify which relate to Britain.
The main story was about BREXIT, explaining what Teresa May had been doing in parliament, whilst the other news was dominated by the women who wishes to return to the UK after leaving the country to join ISIS. Whilst the sport talked about the footballing shock of the week when Chelsea goal keeper refused to be substituted by his manager in the final of the Caribou Cup!

13. Quizzes and games - what can you win?
The games that were being played when i listened to that episode was were a lucky audience member chosen at random would complete a quiz and if they had sufficient correct answers they would win a pair of tickets to go and watch the world cup cricketing final!

14. How does the broadcast fit into the BBC ethos of 'informing, educating and entertaining'?
The news and weather at the start of every half and full hour helps inform the audience about the local and regional problems and queries. Whilst the games and celebrity guest alongside the music played helps entertain the whole audience, which fits into the BBC Radio 1 ethos.

15. How does it differ from commercial breakfast shows?
BBC R1 is paid for by the government, whilst commercial stations such as Capital FM are predominantly paid for by advertisements. Therefore no paid advertisements are audible on air during the BBC radio 1 breakfast show comparing to maybe other radio stations such a commercial stations.

16. Who do you think the audience is from the content of 'your section'? What evidence do you have for this?
I believe that the audience from my section had a specific range, from 18-26. As the music played was very much from the bill board and the tip charts therefore very modern and up to date, however the special guest Graeme Swann will only be and icon for the people in their late teens and early twenties as he retired a while ago meaning not many people will recognise him.

17. How large is the audience for the Radio 1 Breakfast show?
For a quarter of a year it is recorded roughly that the radio one breakfast show had an average of 5.1 million listeners.
18. Which five audience categories did the BBC Trust use to measure audiences in 2016?
19. Which BBC radio station is most targeted at a mass audience?
Radio 2 has the largest target audience as it is over 35s, therefore this could depict anyone as the sing choice, guests and more appeal to all various ages dependant on the day therefore a vast audience range reigns.

20. Which BBC radio station is most aimed at a niche audience with high levels of cultural capital?
Personally i would say the Asian radio station as its target audience are a certain culture and under the age of 35 therefore the niche audience is represented within this.

Radio 1 Construction evaluation

What was the task you were assigned?
Our task was to create a three minute radio podcast, with one game, including a presenter, weather/news presenter and a guest caller.

Who was in your group and what was everyone's role in the task?
My group consisted of Tilly, Regan and I. Tilly and I were the hosts and we also presented the news and weather. Whilst Regan was a guest caller who was included into our game. I also was the Celebrity guest, which i had to mimic Sir David Attenborough.

What fresh ideas did you bring to the programme?
We thought about a new game; celebrity crushes, which would include the audience calling/messaging the R1BS with their details and crush to expose to the rest of the audience to provide some entertainment.

Who did you interview?
We interviewed Sir David Attenbourough, this linked along with our new game. As we had him speaking to a guest. We also interviewed an audience member, which we linked to the game as they were able to communicate with their celebrity crush.

What tracks did you choose and why?
We chose Bohemian Rhapsody, as it is a nations throwback anthem (English). It also has a clear link to the new release of the film. Dont call me up by Mabel. Breath by JaxsJones and Years and Years. These songs were used as they are all made by English artists therefore it helps to abide by the BBC radio 1 remit of supporting local emerging artists.

What was the running order?
Our running order started with a song, then was followed by the news and weather, after another song was played, next the announcement of our details for the audience to call in to be incorporated within our new game, after another song played and finally we finished with the interview and an outro.
Who is your target audience?
Our target audience was the general audience for BBC 1, 15-29 year olds.

How did you relate to/attract your audience?
The songs we played were related to the audience, as they are young emerging artists with popular genres of music to the younger generations. The game we created also was rather comical therefore we felt as though the younger generation would find it more funny that any other generation.

How does your product fit in with the BBC/PSB remit?
I believe that our product fitted in with the BBC PSB remit as it entertained the audience with original ideas.

What do you think you could have improved in terms of content?
I believe we could have planned the script better and publicised our game better to fit the structure of a standard radio broadcast.

What was your initial feedback?
We had rather positive feedback, however the bits missing due to technological fault was noticed therefore next time we could spend more time finalising the editing of the clips to create a crisp final product.

What did others say about your production?
Other class members seemed to enjoy our podcast, however they also noticed the missing bits of our editing.

Identify what went well?
  • We had a zesty intro, which had lots of enthusiasm to fit the genre of the breakfast show.
  • Our links and mentions about the Radio 1 social media and phone number was clearly addressed.
  • The vast use of appropriate jingles.
  • The call to a audience member was clear and understandable with a clear script.
What would you do differently next time?
  • Repetition was quite evident, therefore we could put more planning into the script if we completed this task again.
  • The voice was to happy and enthusiastic when we were talking about the serious news (murders)
  • No link to the song Bohemian Rhapsody, there could be a clear link to the new film.
  • Both presenters read the weather and news which typically doesn't happen, therefore next ti me if only one presenter was present the problem wouldn't arise.
  • No clear positive relationship/general conversation was present between the two performers.

Group Power Point

Essay, Radio 1

How is the Radio 1 Breakfast show, targeting and encouraging audience interaction?

  • Age,class and gender
  • How they maintain the audience
  • How the audience gains pleasure
The radio breakfast show helps to entice the audience through various contraptions such as competitions and games that potentially if won or done correctly leads to a significant reward (e.g a shout out, or tickets to visit somewhere). The target audience is incorporated alongside with the music choice and genre as the audience that listen enjoy the music and tune back into the vast playlists or remixes. They manage to get the audience to return is due to the originality of the show, many factors such as the formal tone, competitions and providing various services such as the radio 1 big weekend - the big festival with live music and special guests-. Various games are played in prime time for the audience to get involved with such as replying to celebs worst reviews, this therefore encourages the audience's opinion which then has a domino effect. The remit of Radio 1 is to entertain and engage a broad range of young listeners with a distinctive mix of contemporary music and speech. Its target audience is 15-29 year olds and it should also provide some programming for younger teenagers. It should also offer a new range of music, support emerging artists - especially those from the UK - and provide a platform of live music, this helps maintain audiences.

Social media is becoming the dominant way for people to share and enjoy material online; it is very easy to access at a little price. Therefore, BBC Radio 1 is branching out into various social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Such as all podcast and radio sessions are filmed, in case of various comical or interesting clips that are produced during the day. This then allows Radio 1 to re-produce this clip to the world to gain a reaction and potentially gain a larger audience. The controller of Radio 1 Ben Cooper has pursued the strategy of 'Listen, Watch and Share'. For example the Radio 1 twitter account has a total of 3.1 million followers, this appeals to a vast audience, so giveaways present on the Radio platform are re-posted to increase the audience awareness. This increases the audience interaction by applying and phoning the show to enter to great opportunity's that are provided for free!

The Radio 1 weekend is a musical festival run purely by Radio 1, it is held annually, in a different location in the UK every year. It is the biggest free-ticketed festival in Europe and always has a different host/acts and guests. However in last few years they have been charging £15 entry fee. In addition, this is a Vast event for Radio 1 fans and Musical enthusiasts to enter complimentary to view popular artists and developing bands. This is a platform over the years (since 2003) has increased the Radio 1 awareness hugely, just ask yourself would you visit a free festival to see the UK's top artists? Some of the largest names that have attended and performed are Bruno Mars, Arctic monkeys, Jessie J, Ellie Goulding and many more! This event is a huge part of Radio 1's scheme to collect/gain and present a format for their target audience to hopefully see them thriving in enjoyment to gain positive publicity and information from word of mouth.

Gregg James has paid a huge part in boosting and encouraging audience interaction, the first and main stunt he has performed was that he created a mock video of Miley Cyrus' wrecking ball video whilst naked. This was uploaded to YouTube and created a vast up raw within each audience member, as they commented and shred within a community, which lead to a domino effect of sharing and liking.

Radio 1 Breakfast Show Research HW

The whole BBC Radio shows a great diversity, from Radio 1-6 which also include Asian, foyle, ulster and world services.

  • Personally, I believe that Radio 1, 2 & 4 have the greatest public service broadcast through various social media platforms such as Twitter and Facebook which helps them publicise one another. As an example the official BBC radio 1 twitter page has over 3 million follows which helps to update key news and events through a public movement.
  • Radio 1 are associated with popular music with a younger audience of around 12-20. Whilst Radio 1 Xtra are associated with a hip hop, garage, RnB, drum & bass vibe (alongside a younger audience again). Radio 2 is an adult orientated with popular music from the bill board songs with various throw back anthems. Whilst Radio 3 present classical, jazz, world music, culture and drama.
  • Therefore, overall many audiences are targeted through various generations such as younger with Radio 1, Radio 2 a more mature adult like audience and Radio 3 with an elderly audience.
Research:
  • The first breakfast show presenter was Tony Blackburn, he remained in the role for nearly six years.
  • Others that have been dj's and/or presented radio 1 are John Peel (1967), Kenny Everett (1967), Annie Nigjtingale (1970), Simon Bates (1980), Miss P (1984), Chris Evans (1995), Greg James (2017).
  • Nick Grimshaw stepped down from hosting the BBC stepped down from hosting the BBC Radio 1 breakfast show, the dj told listeners that he was 'tired' and was ready to hand over nearly a year ago. He is now the second- longest serving breakfast show presenter in the stations history.
  • The records present that radio 1 have an average of 5.72 million listeners a week.
  • The controller of BBC radio 1 is Ben Cooper.

  • Radio 1 is very distinctive through through the use of a broad range of youth listeners with a very vast mix of contemporary music and speech. It offers a range of new music, support emerging artists -especially ones from the UK- and provide platforms (synergy) of live music.
  • The BBC is much stricter when it comes to brands mentions, whilst BBC breakfast tends to be hard news and lunch time tends to be predominantly chat shows. Commercial tend to typically target a vaster audience than the BBC and use pre-recorded interviews which kills to birds with one stone.
Social media and the Radio 1 website:

  • The website is aimed at a younger target audience; this is evident by the presentation of the young emerging and popular artists. Therefore the younger artists predominantly attract a younger target audience. Also various games (try not to laugh laugh challenge w/ water) is present which again would predominantly appeal to a younger target audience. As Radio 1 has a formal presentation with little facts and news.
  • Whilst the Radio 1 one social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter, include formal messages and tweets to the target audience, these include short humerous clips that entertain the audience with encourages the audience to share the comedy to there friends to increase the fan base.
  • However, i believe that Radio 1 also try to provide material/content for other target audience groups, this is evident through the various sections and tabs available to click when on the website. Therefore, this then allows a larger fan base.
  • To fulfill the PSB, Radio 1 provide accurate and impartial news, current affairs and factual programming of the highest editorial standards so that all audiences can engage fully with issues across the UK and the world.
  • Educational content will help support learning for children and teenagers across the UK, whilst audiences will be engaged to explore inspiring and challenging new subjects and activities through a range of partnerships.
  • Innovative content covering may different genres will be provided across a range of services and platforms, setting the standard in the UK and the world.

Jungle analysis

What was the task you were assigned?
Our task was to re-create a an interview of the producer and the marketing manager of the 2016 Jungle Book re-make. We had to incorporate key information and stats about the film to help revise for, for future examinations.
What programme did you use to complete your task?
To edit our interview we used the editing software that is Abode premiere pro, with this software we used to editing tools to help use the green screen to add various layers and images to the background, also other clips such as the trailer was put into place over our original audio and film.
What tools/effect did you use from your programme to create your task?
We used the ultra key to add images to the original audio, this then replaced the green screen background with images from the film to help entice the audience to watch the film.
What were the biggest obstacles to completing your task?
The most difficult part was probably filming all the characters to look at similar eye lines, as i as the interviewer was speaking on my own in one shot while the producer and marketing manager were based in another shot looking in another direction to the camera. This was done to allow a realistic view of an interview.
Did you complete the task on time?
We completed the task on time, as we utilized our time by effectively planning and spreading the work evenly between the whole group. This allowed the work to be completed to the date required.
How do you think this task will help with your Jungle Book revision?
Personally i believe that this will help me remember and revise in the future, as it is an alternative to tedious book work, therefore this variety has created a memory that has been stored that can be recollected easily.
What do you think you could have improved in terms of content and presentation?
Personally, I believe that the quality of my work has improved drastically as i am now familiar with various programs and functions within the media world. Therefore, i now work more effectively and efficiently to the deadline and with a group. My presentation has become cleaner due to vaster editing knowledge due to repetition and practice.
What was your initial feedback? What did others say about your production?
Other companions seemed to enjoy and like our work, this then helped me to recollect the effort put in to create a successful interview that was completed to the deadline.
Identify what went well and with hindsight what would you do differently?
I believe that most of our work was done to an acceptable standard, however if i was to create this task again them i would spend more time editing our work to add more effects and cleanliness to our clips so they would run slightly more smoothly without a space between speech.
